When are large language models (LLMs) good enough for health care? SOLACE-AI
Large language models (LLMs) are a groundbreaking AI technology which have recently emerged, powering services such as ChatGPT. However, there are major obstacles to their use in healthcare: with problems of reliability, trust, and ‘hallucinations’ of fabricated information. Particular care is needed as incorrect LLM outputs could lead to patient harm.
This studentship investigates the problem of how can we know when LLMs are accurate and reliable enough to use. The PhD will analyse diverse LLM outputs, and work with global experts in evidence synthesis and computer science to develop new methods for evaluating the quality of automated clinical guidelines. Using these new methods, the PhD will investigate the quality of LLM-generated reports, to understand whether they are suitable for use in practice or not.
This project will be based around the Wellcome Trust funded SOLACE-AI grant, which aims to pioneer AI-based evidence synthesis to tackle climate change health emergencies.
Students will work in a global project, with the opportunity to travel (including in Africa, and US).
We are now accepting applications for 1 October 2025
How to apply
Candidates should possess or be expected to achieve a 1st or upper 2nd class degree in a relevant subject including the biosciences, computer science, mathematics, statistics, data science, chemistry, physics, and be enthusiastic about combining their expertise with other disciplines in the field of healthcare.
Important information for International Students:
It is the responsibility of the student to apply for their Student Visa. Please note that the EPSRC DRIVE-Health studentship does not cover the visa application fees or the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) required for access to the National Health Service. The IHS is mandatory for anyone entering the UK on a Student Visa and is currently £776 per year for each year of study. Further detail can be found under the International Students tab below.
